Dr. Punit Chhajed is a distinguished Pediatric Nephrologist and Kidney Transplant Physician, widely recognized for his expertise in treating kidney-related disorders in children. With over a decade of clinical experience and advanced training from some of the world’s leading institutions, Dr. Chhajed has been at the forefront of delivering comprehensive and compassionate care to young patients suffering from complex kidney diseases.

His journey in medicine began with his MBBS from the prestigious Grant Medical College & Sir J.J Group of Hospitals, Mumbai. He went on to complete his MD in Pediatrics from Dr. V.M. Government Medical College, Solapur, where his passion for nephrology began to take shape. Driven by a desire to offer specialized care to children with kidney conditions, he pursued further specialization, earning the MRCPCH from the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health (UK), and completing advanced fellowships in Pediatric Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation from King Edward Memorial Hospital, Pune, The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, and IKDRC-ITS, Ahmedabad.

Dr. Chhajed is skilled in the entire spectrum of pediatric nephrology. His clinical interests include:

  • Management of complex kidney diseases such as glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, vasculitis, and congenital kidney anomalies.
  • Pediatric hypertension and electrolyte disorders.
  • Dialysis therapies in children, including peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, plasmapheresis, and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT).
  • Kidney transplantation, including care of children before and after transplant.
  • Performing advanced procedures like kidney biopsies (both native and transplant kidneys) under ultrasound guidance, central venous access placement for dialysis, and peritoneal dialysis catheter insertions.

Currently, Dr. Punit Chhajed practices as a Consultant Pediatric Nephrologist & Transplant Physician at Jupiter Hospital, Baner, Pune, where he leads the Pediatric Nephrology services. Prior to this, his illustrious career has spanned across renowned healthcare institutions in India and abroad:

  • BC Children’s Hospital, Vancouver, Canada & IKDRC-ITS, Ahmedabad: Fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation, where he gained extensive exposure to cutting-edge transplant care and advanced renal therapies.
  • Bhaktivedanta Hospital & Research Institute, Mumbai; The Children’s Hospital, Mumbai; and Jupiter Hospital, Thane: As a Consultant Pediatric Nephrologist, he pioneered peritoneal dialysis and renal biopsies for children, improving access to advanced kidney care in the region.
  • HBT Medical College & Dr. R.N. Cooper Hospital, Mumbai: Assistant Professor and Consultant, where he contributed extensively to clinical care, medical education, and pediatric nephrology advancements.

Dr. Chhajed’s commitment to teaching and mentoring has also been evident in his tenure as an Assistant Professor at various medical colleges, where he trained future pediatricians in nephrology care.

Academic Excellence and Research Contributions

An ardent academician and researcher, Dr. Chhajed has authored several peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals. His work has explored diverse areas like early-onset nephrotic syndrome genetics, pediatric hypertension, neonatal lupus, and mechanical ventilation in children. His recent paper, “New insights from the genetic workup in early-onset nephrotic syndrome,” published in Pediatric Nephrology (2024),has contributed valuable data to the growing field of pediatric kidney genetics. The collaborative work culminating into a research paper – Prospective study of etiology & outcome in Acute Kidney Injury published in Pediatric Nephrology (2025) highlights the spectrum of causes of AKI from low & middle income countries and the outcome data.

He is frequently invited to speak at conferences and has also organized educational events like the Pediatric Nephrology CME – “Prevention of Kidney Disease: From Womb to Tomb and Paediatric Supercon, Jupiter Hospital, Pune” fostering greater awareness of childhood kidney diseases.
